ROLE BREAKDOWN:
[Jess]: Female, ages 28-35. All ethnicities. Authentic and personable, great energy. Raised outside a Midwestern City, where birthdays meant backyard sheet cake and everyone knowing everyone’s name. She was the first to leave, chasing a career in a big city. Professional success, personal solitude. Her closest connections now exist online—old friends raising families, scattered roommates, coworkers who only know fragments of her. Birthdays have become something to mute. Too much spotlight, too much distance. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Jess’ Friend]: Male, ages 28-40. All ethnicities. A guy Jess connected with at a wedding. Authentic, personable, great energy, unique and interesting. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Ex-Boyfriend’s Mom]: Female, ages 50-70. All ethnicities. Warm, approachable, and authentic. Has maintained a bond with Jess even after her and her son broke up. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[8th Grade Science Teacher]: Male or female, ages 44-60. All ethnicities. Authentic, natural, grounded. Jess’ former science teacher who remembers her fondly after all these years. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Childhood Neighbor]: Male or female, ages 25-40. All ethnicities. Jess’ childhood neighbor, they lost touch when Jess moved away and now reconnect at her birthday party. Natural, authentic, great energy. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Best Friend]: Male or female, ages 28-35. All ethnicities. Organized a surprise birthday party for Jess. Personable, warm energy, authentic, unique personality. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Rachel]: Female, ages 28-35. All ethnicities. Authentic and personable, great energy. The youngest of three in a noisy midwestern household, raised by two schoolteacher parents who instilled an equal measure of steadiness and curiosity. She moved to a big city, built a career in publishing, and carved out independence. But she rarely came home except for hurried holiday visits. When both parents pass within a year, Rachel inherits the family house now preserved in amber, dust settling over rooms that once pulsed with life. Burnt out and uprooted, she isn’t sure she belongs in the Midwest anymore. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
[Lena]: Two houses down, Rachel’s inseparable childhood friend. Backyard sleepovers, homecoming dances, summer lifeguard shifts. When Rachel left, Lena stayed—became a nurse, married young, divorced quietly, now caring for an aging aunt. Beneath her steady routine, she’s carried a yearning for a deep friendship like she once had as a kid. When Rachel’s name suddenly lights up her phone, a door cracks open again. Authentic and natural, great energy. PRINCIPAL ROLE.
