Synopsis:
UPSTATE New York - 1986. A young equine vet is called in the middle of the night to make an emergency house call– A champion dressage horse owned by a high ranking mob member is colicking. Over the course of one night– she works to save the horse, finds unexpected connection with one of the mobster’s sons, witnesses a deadly dispute, and confronts the night’s aftermath with ex-Rajneesh followers who are hosting their annual intermediate sitar workshop at the neighboring farm.
Team Bios:
ELIZA BARRY CALLAHAN (b.1995, New York NY) is a writer, filmmaker, and musician from New York City. Her debut novel, The Hearing Test, was published in the US and the UK in 2024 to critical acclaim, was longlisted for the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction and is a finalist for the New York Public Library Young Lion Award. Her writing has appeared in places including The Paris Review, BOMB, and frieze. Her short film “The Non- Actor “ with Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti premiered at Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2025. Callahan co-wrote and creative produced BUST (dir. Angalis Field) which premiered at Sundance 2024. She is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia University in the writing program and is a New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellow. She received her BA and MFA from Columbia University.
OLIVER AGGER is a writer, filmmaker, and linguist. He has worked on films by Michael Mann, Matthew Barney, Eliza Barry Callahan, and Jacqueline Christie. Previously, he was an associate producer for National Geographic and ABC News. At ABC, he won an Emmy as a segment producer on a special called "The Shot: Race For The Vaccine." Oliver has worked for Ben Stiller and John Lesher’s Red Hour Films. He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Comparative Literature.
ELIZA SOROS is a New York based filmmaker. She has produced numerous projects, which have screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, AFI, MoMA, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), among others. She graduated with a BA from Brown University and received her MFA and MBA at NYU’s Tisch and Stern, respectively.

ROLES WE’RE CASTING:
[ENZO] (27) thoughtful, self-aware precocious, nihilistic, emotionally frayed. A mobster’s son. All nature, no nurture. Knows there’s no way out of his family operation and has accepted his fate. Wanted to be a pre-socratic philosopher. Italian. Unconventionally attractive. Believes loneliness is a precondition for living. Thinks his brother is a fool but pities him in a way.
[ROCCO] (32) is Enzo’s older brother. Wants to earn his father’s approval and admiration. Hot tempered, tries to conceal his insecurities, pressured to perform a kind of masculine stereotype. Deep family pride. Italian American pride. Will do whatever he needs to do to rise the ranks of the mafia community. Resentful of his younger brother, who he senses doesn’t respect him, and behaves patronizingly toward him.
[RISHI] Early 60s. Born in Alibaug. An ex-Rajneeshee who lived in Oregon for several years in Rajeeshpuram till 1984. Relocated to the Hudson Valley where he leads sitar workshops for all levels and is involved in the local folk community. Knowing and gentle but a leader. Has a very big smile.
[CHRIS] Late 20s. Finding his way. Finished college at a nearby liberal arts school and never left the area. Studied anthropology. Abandoned Judaism for Buddism. Teaches Susuki violin. Loves mancala. Volunteering to help Rishi run his workshop. Eager to find true connection to himself, to others.
[INTERMEDIATE SITAR WORKSHOP MEMBERS] A group of 15 people of all ages and walks of life seeking to develop a new skill, sitar playing, in a short amount of time. All ultimately searching to fill some sense of lack.
